The Tokaj wine region hides some fascinating secrets. Due to its volcanic origins, the wine region has one of the most complex and nuanced geology and terroir, which provides winemakers with a true challenge but also an unmatched opportunity for creativity.
The Masterclass will explore the native grape varieties, the types of Tokaji wine specialities and the role of botrytis from dry wines to Aszú.
István Balassa has founded his multi-award-winning family winery Balassa Tokaj in 2008, while he has also worked as the Head Viticulturalist at the region’s largest producer, Grand Tokaj.
He is dedicated to a scientific and research-based approach to winemaking and believes that Tokaj could experience a renaissance with the help of these tools. Nature has blessed the region with unique characteristics, and it has the potential to become one of the world’s best.

The Villány Wine Region is Hungary’s most influential red wine region, where the major international grape variety, Cabernet Franc has found its natural habitat. A unique look at Cabernet Franc through the eyes of the Villány Wine Region. The Master Class will offer the opportunity to fully present the Villányi Franc classification, to get closer the Classicus, Premium and Super Premium wines of Cabernet Franc.
András Horkay is the founder and director of the Central European Wine Institute (CEWI) which provides WSET full license wine education courses in Hungary. He is a WSET Diploma graduate (Dip WSET) and a WSET certified wine lecturer (CE). He fulfilled the position of the Chairman of the National Wine Expert Commission in Hungary between 2013-2018, since 2016 he has been an advisor to the Villány wine region. Since 2022, he has been teaching at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Szeged in the field of tourism and hospitality. In 2019 he was awarded the Par Excellence Lecturer title by the Hungarian Sommelier Association.
